Dr Micheal Mosely is known for his fat-shedding diets, but some may not realise that part of his inspiration to create these weight loss plans come from his own struggle with type 2 diabetes.
The doctor has had many careers, starting out as an investment banker, then retraining in medicine at the Royal Free Hospital in London before finally working at the BBC for more than two decades.
He began as a trainee assistant producer at the broadcaster and became an experienced medical journalist over the years with many of his own series.
But it was actually his own health struggles with that led him to change his eating habits and lose weight, in turn reversing his diabetes and inspiring him to create his famous diets.
During his time as a medical journalist, Mosely claims he was TOFI (Thin on the Outside, Fat Inside) and said that at one point there was a lot of fat clogging up his organs despite appearing fine. This led to a surprise type 2 diabetes diagnosis.
On his Fast800 website, Dr Mosely wrote: "In 2014, I was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic. I was not particularly overweight, weighing about 189lbs (86kgs) and I didn’t look particularly fat, but that was because a lot of the fat I was carrying was internal."
He says that he did his research and found out that the condition could be reversed with the right lifestyle changes. Instead of taking medication, Dr Mosely started up on the 5:2 diet - where you eat normally for five days of the week and cut down to around 600 calories twice a week.
The doctor lost a whopping 9kgs and was able to reverse his diabetes. Under his new 5:2 diet, people now aim to cut 800 calories on the two days where they eat less.
The doctor says that another major source of inspiration stems from his father's poor health, which he says led to a relatively young passing.
Speaking to Australian news site SBS, Mosely spoke about how his father unfortunately lost his life due to health struggles due to diabetes.
Mosely told the publication: "[My father] struggled with his weight and, in late middle age, developed type 2 diabetes.
"Despite being on medication, he died at the relatively young age of 74 from complications of the condition, including heart failure and early signs of dementia."
Mosely is now committed to safe and manageable weight loss plans such as the Very Fast 800 diet and the previously mentioned 5:2 diet. These diets have a focus on when you eat as well as what you eat, with tactical fasting that helps to promote fat burning.
In terms of what you should be eating, the doctor stands by a Mediterranean diet which is rich in vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans and peas, unrefined grains, olive oil and fish.
On his website, the doctor says "I’m not exceptional" when discussing how he reversed diabetes, and believes with the right support and lifestyle anyone can turn their health around.
