Inside Greater Manchester's most expensive house on the market for a whopping £12 million

An incredible mansion has been put on the market with a staggering £12 million price tag - making it the most expensive property for sale in Greater Manchester. The huge Grade II listed house is found in none other than the pricest part of the region, Bowdon, an affluent area known to attract millionaires and footballers.

The average house price in the Trafford suburb stands at a staggering £915,100, which has gone up by a whopping 20 percent in the last year alone. It is no surprise then that this stunning period property sits in the leafy village amongst a wealth of huge mansions.

On the market with estate agents Gascoigne Halman, the historic home boasts 11 bedrooms, an elegant spa, a beautiful garden and a whole host of original features that stem back to the Victorian era.

Built in 1869, the gentleman's residence is named 'Oakley' and was commissioned by Henry Theodore Gaddum, a wealthy cotton and silk merchant.

Nestled in just over one and half acres of gorgeous grounds, the house is an example of Victorian Gothic revival architecture and boasts many medieval origins.

This property still retains many of its internal period features including high ceilings with ornicing, solid hardwood doors, deep skirting boards and oak flooring.

Typical of a mansion of its time, Oakley boasts several reception rooms which include a drawing room, dining room, sitting room, music room, garden room and study.

It also has an incredible spa-like leisure suite complete with its own pool, jacuzzi, sauna, seating area, changing rooms and a gym.

The impressive master bedroom suite overlooks the south-facing rear gardens and includes a large bedroom, dressing room and luxurious bathroom.

There are ten remaining bedrooms spread across the rest of the home, as well as several bathrooms and en-suites.

“Properties like Oakley are often passed through families for generations, so this is a very rare opportunity to purchase a Grade II listed residence of this calibre," said Phillip Diggle, area director for Gascoigne Halman.

“The £12 million price tag is reflective of Oakley’s medieval origins and stunning Victorian Gothic revival architecture which combines to offer a sumptuous mansion set within just over 1.5 acres.

“Oakley was commissioned by cotton and silk merchant Henry Theodore Gaddum whose initials can be seen carved into the property’s southerly elevation and no expensive was spared in its lavish architecture.

"The property’s façade, which reaches 30 metres in parts, is richly encrusted in leaf ornamentation, finials and animated gargoyles. The clock tower is surmounted with Tudor domes, whilst small busts of King Arthur and Guinevere adorn one of the rear doorways," Phillip added.

“Creating an immediate impression, the entrance hall features limestone flooring, folding arched glazed doors to the reception hall, again with limestone flooring, a sweeping staircase with hardwood balustrade and stairwell with boarded and glazed cathedral roof.

“The property was completed in 1869 and it is testament to both the excellence in construction and care of its residents over the years that it remains in such pristine condition.
