An inmate who disappeared from a prison in remote NSW has been recaptured and charged after a two-day search.

The 24-year-old man went missing from the mixed-security Broken Hill Correctional Centre, 40km from the South Australian border, about 1pm on Tuesday.

He was found at a property on Broken Hill's Creedon St- only a few kilometres from the jail - nearly two days later, on Thursday morning.

The man was taken to Broken Hill police station, where an outstanding warrant for escaping from lawful custody was executed.

He was refused bail and is due to appear at Broken Hill Local Court on Thursday.

Corrective Services NSW said a full investigation would be conducted into how the incident occurred.
