Members of the public have been warned not to approach a fugitive who escaped from custody in the NSW outback town of Broken Hill.

Zac Riley, 24, was last seen at a corrective services facility attached to Broken Hill Local Court about 1pm on Monday, NSW Police said on Tuesday.

He is described as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander appearance, with a thin build, 170-175cm tall, with black hair, beard and a moustache.

Anyone who sees Riley is urged not to approach him but to call triple zero immediately.

A Corrective Services NSW spokesperson said the man was on remand at the time of his escape and was being housed at the mixed-security Broken Hill Correctional Centre.

"Corrective Services NSW officers became aware of the escape at around 1pm and immediately notified NSW Police, who are conducting a search," the spokesperson said.

"There will be a full investigation into how the incident occurred."
