Ink: Neo Lanna Dance reinterprets northern identity

Choreographer and performer Ronnarong Khampha presents a contemporary performance of Ink: Neo Lanna Dance at Fahlanna Art Museum in Chiang Mai, on July 12 at 6.30pm.

A collaboration with three musicians, this is an interdisciplinary performance project that reinterprets traditional Lanna dance by integrating movement, music and visual art.

The project explores the concept of "Neo Lanna", a new expression of identity that remains rooted in cultural heritage while connecting with audiences in the present day.

The performance views ink as a trace of the body, breath and inner emotion expressed through movement. The body becomes a living brush, creating lines, symbols and marks that can never be repeated.

Through movement language, the performance invites audiences to explore the relationship between body, space, time and the beauty of imperfection, while expanding beyond conventional boundaries of traditional Lanna dance.

Participating musicians are Wittaya Polvitoon, a scholar of traditional Lanna music from Lampang; Witsarut Tawinno who specialises in Western classical string music, particularly the cello; and Torpong Samerjai, an artist specialising in contemporary Lanna and northern Thai ethnic music.

Supported by the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture, this project aims to promote, preserve and develop Lanna folk dance within the context of performing arts, extending cultural heritage into the dimension of the creative economy and making art accessible to the public free of charge.
