What a Caecilian Actually Is
Caecilians are the third order of amphibians, sitting alongside frogs and salamanders in the class Amphibia. They have no limbs, no visible ears, and eyes so reduced that in many species they sit beneath a thin layer of skin, functional enough to detect light but useless for forming images. What they do have is a pair of chemosensory tentacles, one on each side of the snout, positioned between the eye and the nostril. These tentacles sample the soil for chemical signals the way a tongue samples air, giving the animal a precise read of its tunnel environment without ever surfacing.
