Why Lighthouses and Not Just the Beach
The view from a lighthouse lantern room is not the view from the shore scaled upward. It is a different thing entirely, the sea flattening into geometry, the reef patterns showing through the shallows, fishing boats reduced to punctuation. India has over two hundred lighthouses maintained by the Directorate of General Lighthouses and Lightships under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. Most are operational, fenced, and closed. A small number open to the public on scheduled days, and those are the ones worth planning a trip around.
