India: Dawn at site of deadly bridge collapse as death toll rises to 141

The death toll from a bridge collapse in western India rose to at least 141 on Monday as a search operation for survivors was under way.

As many as 400 people plummeted into the River Machchu when the 19th Century bridge gave way in the state of Gujarat, western India, on Sunday.

Footage showed dozens of people clinging onto the cables and twisted remains of the bridge as emergency teams struggled to rescue them.

Some tried to clamber up the broken structure while others swam to safety.

A local official said most of the victims were women, children or the elderly.
