Independent who defected from SNP will run for third term at upcoming Renfrewshire Council election

An Independent councillor has confirmed he will be fighting for a third term at Renfrewshire House at the upcoming local election.

Andy Doig, who represents Johnstone North, Kilbarchan, Howwood and Lochwinnoch, insists more investment is needed in his ward and he wants to continue standing up for residents in the chamber.

He was first elected in 2012 as an SNP councillor but quit the party in 2017 and got back in as an Independent in the poll that year.

As one of the councillors who has held the balance of power in the chamber over the past five years, Councillor Doig says he wants to continue using his Independent status to put the needs of residents above party politics.

He told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "Victories in my first term included securing a mobile bank service for Lochwinnoch and winning the fight to save the greenbelt at Branscroft in Kilbarchan from development.

"In the current term, I have fought for the upgrade of the A737 and the restoration of the school crossing patroller at Kilbarchan Cross.

"I have backed the SNP administration on ideas which have been good for the community but I have voted with the Labour opposition when I thought they were right.

"I have used my Independent voice to put the needs of my constituents first. Having held the balance of power over the last five years, I have secured major investment for the McKillop Institute with village improvement funds and initial investment for the Steeple Hall in Kilbarchan.

"But more is needed so the message in coming months will be vote Doig, he gets things done."

The election is set to take place on Thursday, May 5, with votes being counted the following day.
