Incredible throwback picture shows Edinburgh Airport in the 1990s

An Edinburgh local has shared an incredible throwback picture of Edinburgh Airport in the 1990s that shows just how much things have changed.

Gary Saddler, who can fly planes, was a member of the airport flying club and regularly visited the capital airport. The image shows the original layout of Edinburgh airport which was the same as it was when it opened in the seventies.

The amazing image shows hundreds of '90s cars and the old runway which has now been replaced and it is a proper blast from the past. Gary described how he took family and friends onto his plane where he would usually go to and from Edinburgh to see the beautiful surrounding views.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live he said: "I was a member of the Turnhouse Flying Club in the 1990s. This was taken sometime in the mid-90s. I was flying a Turnhouse Flying Club Cessna 172 on approach to the old 'club' runway that is long gone.

"Most of it is now the long stay car park. One of my passengers must have taken the photo.

"The airport is in the same layout as when it opened in the late 70s.

"There are two British Airways aircraft and an AirUK Bae146 on what was the 'domestic' pier.

"I’d regularly make local flights to nearby airfields such as Cumbernauld, Glenrothes, and Perth. Most flights were ‘sightseeing’ flights for family and friends and normally just went Edinburgh to Edinburgh."

He continued: "I did make a few longer flights from Edinburgh to Blackbushe Airport in Surrey, Newtownards in Northern Ireland, and Gloucester.

"Having a private pilot's license also allows me to sightsee from the air in the USA, South Africa, and the Canaries. The flying clubs based at Edinburgh Airport used a short runway that was parallel to the main runway.

"There are some remnants left but it is mostly covered by the long-stay car park and aircraft parking stands. You can see where it was in the photo."
