In 2022, sooty bark disease emerged in British Columbia's maples; today it threatens Canada's iconic bigleaf maple

In British Columbia, maple trees have been observed with sooty bark disease, and researchers are working on ways to reduce the rate at which the disease spreads. Sooty bark disease, which is associated with a fungus called Cryptostroma corticale, was detected in British Columbia for the first time in 2022. This disease has already affected ornamental maples and is spreading to a Canadian native species of maple trees.
