In 2003, a businessman bought a 23,000-acre estate to restore it; now it's home to a million trees and red squirrels

An English businessman who purchased a traditional 23,000-acre hunting estate in Scotland in 2003 has spent more than two decades reshaping its heavily grazed terrain, planting one million native trees and successfully reintroducing red squirrels to the glens. Paul Lister acquired the Alladale estate in Sutherland, roughly an hour's drive north of Inverness, at a time when it was primarily used for traditional pursuits such as deer stalking and salmon fishing.

Over the course of 23 years, the property has evolved into the Alladale Wilderness Reserve, now serving as both an eco-tourism destination and a major ecological restoration effort in the Scottish Highlands.
