In 1995, Hurricane Luis damaged Maiden Island Reef in the Caribbean, already hit by development. Years later, Reef Balls supported 5,000 new coral colonies representing 30 species

Maiden Island's reef faced a difficult combination of storm damage and pressure from development. The Reef Ball Foundation later helped create a large artificial reef system using specially designed concrete modules that mimic natural reef structures. More than 5,000 coral colonies representing 30 species were propagated and attached to the Reef Balls.

Maiden Island's reef system in the Caribbean faced serious challenges from both natural damage and human activity.
