On the evening of October 30, 1938, millions of Americans tuned in to what they believed was an ordinary radio broadcast. Instead, many heard a series of urgent news bulletins reporting that Martians had landed in New Jersey and were invading Earth.
The programme was not real. It was Orson Welles' radio adaptation of H. G. Wells' classic science fiction novel The War of the Worlds. Yet its realistic presentation left some listeners convinced the United States was under attack, making it one of the most famous broadcasts in media history.
