In 1905, an American Black woman suffering from scalp ailment and hair loss experimented and developed a line of haircare and became first female self-made millionaire in the US: How Madam C.J. Walker built her empire?

In 1905, an American Black woman suffering from scalp ailment and hair loss experimented with haircare products and began building a business that later made her one of the first African American female millionaires in the United States. That woman was Madam C.J. Walker, born Sarah Breedlove. Walker developed products for Black women at a time when the market offered few products made for their hair and scalp needs. Her own experience with hair loss became part of the reason she began searching for solutions. Her work later grew into the Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company. The company sold hair and scalp products, trained sales agents and created opportunities for thousands of Black women. Walker is commonly described as America's first self-made female millionaire and is also recognized by the Smithsonian as the first African American female millionaire.
