Image of Mini involved in serious crash released by police

Police investigating a serious collision that left a passenger fighting for his life have released an image of the car involved.

Emergency services were called to the A533 Southern Expressway in Runcorn shortly before 6pm on Monday, October 17 following reports of a crash. At the scene they found a silver Mini Cooper with a black roof, which had left the road and overturned on an embankment.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said the driver fled the scene, leaving the passenger behind in the car. The casualty, a 41-year-old "local man", was freed by firefighters and taken to Aintree University Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

A 29-year-old man from Widnes was later arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and released under investigation.

Enquiries are ongoing and investigators have now released an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) camera image of the car involved.

Police Constable Liz Thompson, of Cheshire Police 's serious and complex collision investigation unit, said: “The A533 Southern Expressway is one of the main routes in and out of Runcorn and at the time this incident occurred there would have been a number of motorists passing through who may hold vital information.

“As part of our investigation we want to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident and believes they may have witnessed the collision or seen anything that didn’t look quite right.

“The same goes for anyone with any CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident.

“We’d also like to hear from anyone who saw the vehicle in the photo being driven from Widnes town centre towards Runcorn prior to the collision.

“From our enquiries, we believe the car left Widnes town centre at 5.47pm before being driven across the Mersey Gateway bridge towards Runcorn.

“I urge anyone with any information – no matter how small – to get in touch.”
