Illan Meslier on Hugo Lloris and Manuel Neuer influence as Leeds United man eyes France call-up

Illan Meslier says he is determined to earn a call-up for the France national team by maintaining his strong performances for Leeds United.

The Frenchman is approaching 100 Premier League games for the Whites at the age of just 22, and was praised for his performances in Leeds' famous win at Anfield in November, and goalless draw against Newcastle United on New Year's Eve.

Hugo Lloris announced his retirement from international duty last week, and Meslier has been quick to set himself the target of working his way into Didier Deschamps' plans.

The Leeds goalkeeper has been capped 11 times by France under-21s but is yet to receive a call-up for the senior team by Les Bleus' boss Deschamps.

Meslier also opened up on which goalkeepers have influenced him the most, and cited his compatriot Lloris, and Bayern Munich and Germany legend Manuel Neuer as his two biggest role models.

"Now for 2023, it's to try and be the best for each game, and also to keep clean sheets because that is the target all the time for the goalkeepers," Meslier told NBC Sports.

"If I can go for the first team with the national team it will be perfect, but I know that will depend on my performances for the first team with Leeds United.

"I saw Hugo when he was in Nice and Lyon, and of course I saw him growing up in Tottenham. He is obviously a French legend, and my role model is Manuel Neuer because he's a very complete, modern goalkeeper.

"He has evolved the position of the goalkeeper and won the World Cup in 2014."
