A five-course menu from one of London’s most celebrated restaurants, two Michelin-starred Ikoyi, will be available for a cut-price £60 over two days later this month.
Dishes such as jollof rice with crab custard will be available on Uber Eats between May 10-11, with the delivery app continuing its push to put some of the country’s best cooking — and Brooklyn Beckham’s takeaway concept — on the back of mopeds.
Ikoyi is the latest high-profile restaurant to team up with the brand. Last year, Ynyshir, also two-star, arrived in London from rural Wales to send out a £200, 10-course offering.
Brooklyn Beckham, who occasionally cooks on American TV, followed, though Uber Eats conceded he wouldn’t be in the kitchen to prepare his chicken tikka masala, spaghetti bolognese, and fried breakfast sandwich. The Standard’s David Ellis was unimpressed.
This time, Ikoyi co-founders Jeremy Chan and Iré Hassan-Odukale are in the spotlight. On the way are the likes of mutton merguez and green goddess slaw, fried chicken with scotch bonnet and raspberry, the aforementioned jollof, suya pork with mustard greens, and, by way of dessert, a sugar cake with various berries.
The evening tasting menu at Ikoyi — albeit with many more dishes, cooked close by and served in a beautiful dining room by hospitality professionals at the top of their game — usually costs £320, so £60 sounds like it has the potential to be a steal.
If the food from Ynyshir is anything to go by — pretty impressive, if toweringly priced for a takeaway — this latest foray into the public eye by Uber could well be worth taking notice of.
That’s how Uber is spinning it, anyway: “We created our Uber Eats Hosts series to bring some of the nation’s best, and often hard-to-access, restaurants to our customers,” said Uber’s Matthew Price.
“After the success of Ynyshir, we are so excited to bring Ikoyi on board in the next stage of our series.”
For Chan, Ikoyi’s executive chef, it is his first flirtation with the world of delivery and dishes have been developed and adapted with that in mind.
He said: “I often enjoy on delivery food at home when I’m not working. When Uber Eats approached us, we were delighted to partner with them and share some of the tastes and flavours of Ikoyi.”
