‘If lashes are what you all want, lashes are what you’ll get’ — the genius of Doja Cat’s trolling

Just when you think she can’t best herself, Doja Cat steps out in the most bats*** crazy outfit you’ve ever seen.

This week Doja served up look after look at couture week in Paris, including a full red bejewelled skin work of art which took a painstaking five hours to apply, only for ungrateful fans to complain that it “needed an eyelash”.

The red look, which Doja wore to the Schiaparelli Haute Couture spring/summer 2023 show, was the joint product of makeup mastermind Pat McGrath and Schiaparelli creative designer Daniel Roseberry. It saw the Kiss Me More singer covered head to toe in 30,000 Swarovski crystals, in an alien-esque look many compared to a red M&M, a blood vessel and the Marvel villain Red Skull.

She was rivalled only by Kylie Jenner, who arrived wearing a black Schiaparelli gown with a full scale lion head affixed to its bust, which then appared on a model walking the runway as she watched on from the front row.

Doja’s red look was widely praised, despite the one resounding comment from fans: “Needs a lash”, “Could have used a pair of lashes”, “Love this but why no lashes?” You get the picture. Doja became aware of these comments, as she posted a cryptic response Instagram on Tuesday evening saying, “If lashes are what you all want, lashes are what you'll get. See you at Viktor & Rolf.”

Most would assume Doja would go for an OTT falsie look, with sky-high lashes almost as big as her head — but Doja Cat is cunning and cannot be predicted. Instead, she responded in classic Doja meme-y fashion and stepped out at Viktor & Rolf with five false eyelashes affixed to her face, forming a moustache, beard and pair of eyebrows.

She paired her unconventional makeup look with a Viktor & Rolf high collar tailored shirt and a pinstriped coat, as well as her current favourite blue sunglasses and crucifix jewellery.

The look has been as well received as her Schiaparelli creation, though it likely took 3.5 fewer hours to create, with fans praising her irreverent response to the “needs a lash” critique.

“One thing about Doja Cat, she will have her own chapter in the history of Fashion Week,” one fan tweeted, while another added: “I appreciate Doja Cat being unapologetically committed to serving a look.”

Addressing the look, Doja told a reporter at Nylon: “A few days ago I did Schiaparelli and people were saying that I didn’t have lashes and that they’re disappointed I didn’t have on lashes. Yet I worked with one of the greatest makeup artists of all time, Pat McGrath. So today I gave them lashes.”

But Doja wasn’t done. Yesterday evening she arrived at the Jean Paul Gaultier show in a belted blue leather dress, holding aloft a bunch of grapes and a cigarette. And yes, she was wearing lashes. At this point, the props don’t even make that much sense, but they’re just fun to see. Keep it coming, Doja.
