- Princess Zahra Aga Khan, daughter of the Aga Khan, has revealed that the famous thoroughbred racehorse Shergar was killed "in an awful way" within two days of its kidnapping in February 1983.
- Shergar was abducted by six armed men from Ballymany Stud in County Kildare, Ireland, with a £2 million ransom demanded for its safe return.
- The ransom was never paid because Shergar was owned by a syndicate, and the Aga Khan could not secure agreement from all co-owners, nor did he want the money to fall into the wrong hands.
- Princess Zahra described the killing to the Telegraph as "very unprofessionally done" and "awful”, emphasising that the horse, a national symbol of Irish breeding, did not deserve such a fate.
- Despite the long-standing mystery, Shergar's remains have never been recovered, and no individual or group has officially claimed responsibility for the theft, though the IRA were primary suspects at the time.
