Ian Wright 'disappointed' for Chelsea ace after FA Cup final shootout defeat to Liverpool

Ian Wright has admitted he was "disappointed" for Chelsea star Mason Mount after his crucial penalty was saved, handing Liverpool the chance to win the FA Cup final.

Mount pledged that Chelsea would get payback against Liverpool after suffering defeat in his last five Wembley finals. The clash ended 0-0 after 120 minutes, just like the Carabao Cup final, as it went down to whoever could keep their nerve from twelve yards.

A miss for both teams from Blues' captain Cesar Azpilicueta and Liverpool's Sadio Mane meant the penalty shootout went to sudden death. Mount's crucial penalty was saved by Liverpool's Alisson Becker, before Kostas Tsimikas converted from the spot to win the FA Cup for Liverpool for the first time in 16 years.

After an intense 120 minutes in which both sides had several chances to break the deadlock, the game had to be decided on penalties as it did three months ago in the Carabao Cup final. Speaking on ITV, Wright said: "I’m disappointed for Mason Mount because when a player misses a penalty at this level with so much on the line, you've got to feel gutted for him."

The England international has now lost his last six finals at Wembley as Chelsea became the first team in history to lose three consecutive FA Cup finals. Prior to kick-off, Wright spoke about the opportunity for Mount to redeem himself after missing numerous chances in the Carabao Cup final saying: "What’s good about being able to play for a team and a club of this stature, you get the opportunity to play in these games again and this is what he’s probably been thinking."

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson consoled Mount after the Reds were confirmed winners. Ultimately, it was another brutal ending for Mount and Chelsea in the FA Cup final as Thomas Tuchel's side end the season without any trophies.
