A Leeds chippy has been dubbed one of the best in the UK and it’s not hard to see why.
Hillycroft Fisheries in Morley has made the Fry Awards list of 50 top chippies in the UK. The Fry Awards see judges go into chippies across the country secretly to judge the food, venue cleanliness, staff, money value, social media and more.
Now, the 50 best fish and chip takeaways across the country have been named - and several of them are in Leeds. With one on my doorstep to try, I just had to forget about my diet for the night and go to see what all the fuss is about.

From the outside Hillycroft looks pretty new, and usually I would avoid the new looking chippies as I’m a sucker for old and traditional. But if it’s dubbed one of the best in the UK then I refuse to judge a book by its cover.
I arrived on a Thursday at tea time. The chippy was quiet with friendly staff inside. I ordered the meal for two, which I thought was a really nice touch as it’s not often you see meal deals on at a chippy.
Costing £18.95 for the meal deal we got two fish and chips and two sides, we both chose curry sauce. The woman serving was polite and friendly, and even flipped the box upside down to make sure both sides of the meal were covered with salt and vinegar- again another nifty trick I thought highly of.
I got the food in the car and oh my god, I was like Lewis Hamilton driving home to eat that food. It smelt incredible (don’t worry I’m exaggerating and of course stuck to the speed limit). The whole five-minute journey home all I kept thinking was 'I’m going to eat every scrap of this' because it smelt SO good.
After unpacking the fish and chips, I was in love what I saw. It looked, for want of a better word - “banging” - and exactly like what a good portion of fish and chips should look like.
The portion sizes were decent too - not too little and not oversized to the point where it puts you off. The chips, fish and curry sauce were all cooked to perfection and the fish had just the right amount of batter meaning it wasn’t too greasy.
When I said I was going to demolish the full thing, I meant it. There was nothing but a couple of chips left on my plate.
I couldn’t recommend this chippy enough. They were the best fish and chips I’ve had since moving to Leeds - and were just like some you would find on the Yorkshire coast! There’s no surprise that Hillycroft Fisheries has been dubbed one of the best in the UK and if you live local you really need to try them.
