I tried the Iceland £2 Heinz Beanz filled hash browns and 'one thing let them down'

When I saw that Iceland were launching a Heinz Beanz filled hash brown I was beyond excited.

There's nothing better than a hash brown on a fry-up, and this new combination is a guaranteed naughty mixture of two key ingredients of a full English brekkie. Granted, I'm sure this a bean-filled hash brown isn't for everyone, but as a hash brown lover, I was really intrigued to see how they tasted.

Available in Iceland stores now, I managed to grab myself a bag for £2 before they inevitably fly off the shelves. Iceland is known for its quirky and unique frozen snacks which I've always been a fan of and I was very keen to give these a go.

The hash brown

In terms of aesthetics, the hash browns were longer than a normal hash brown but very thick. I popped the hash browns in the oven for 18 minutes which made them nice and crispy.

Once cooked they were a gorgeous golden colour and had a really satisfying crunch. The hash browns were very hot in the middle, so be sure to take care when taking your bite and don't burn your mouth like I did!

The taste of the hash brown itself was absolutely delicious, it was deliciously fluffy on the inside and really tasty in general. I've got to admit that there weren't actually as many beans as I thought there would be in the middle of the hash brown though, which did let them down slightly.

I thought it was going to be filled with baked beans, but there were only a few which was a tad disappointing. Nevertheless, it still tasted good, but overall, there was one key ingredient that I thought it lacked.

It needed cheese. Without cheese the hash brown was a little dry in some parts as the beans had become quite claggy once cooked in the oven.

Cheese was definitely the answer, so much so that I was even considering popping some in the middle myself and whacking it in the oven for an extra few minutes for some cheesy goodness. I wouldn't say the lack of cheese completely ruined the hash brown, but I do think it could've been a nice addition.

The verdict

Would I use these as a replacement hash brown on my brekkie? I'm not sure.

As delicious as they were, they didn't have as many beans as I thought. Let's just say, I'd probably choose to have these hash browns with more beans on my plate to mix, because it just wasn't quite enough for me.

An addition of cheese would have been absolutely scrumptious too, but maybe that's just me being picky. As a whole, the hash browns had a delicious taste, but sadly weren't as good as I thought they'd be.
