For those of us who are keeping up with haircare trends, the viral heatless curling technique has been doing the rounds on TikTok recently.
If, like me, you struggle with thin, fine hair that very rarely holds any form of hairstyle, let alone a curl, then you will have been wanting to know if these satin heatless wands could actually work.
However, like so many social-media trends, some branded heatless curlers can actually cost a pretty penny, with the Kitsch set costing up to £20. Luckily, Aldi have, once again, got in on the game with its own set that costs a fraction of the branded versions.
The German supermarket came to many haircare fans rescue with the launch of its new Lacura Satin Heatless Curling Set that costs all of just £4.99. Like, so many Aldi fans, I rushed straight to its Middle Aisle section before it could officially sell out.
Already a hit on TikTok, the budget hair product has been snapped up by multiple other fans who have been left absolutely stunned at its ability to create those classic, bouncy curls overnight. Naturally, I was excited to see if it could actually work in my fine and fussy tresses...
How does Aldi's heatless curling set work?
Similar to many other sets on the marketplace, the Lacura Satin Heatless Curling Set comes complete with a satin heatless curing rod, two satin scrunchies and a claw clip.
The supermarket says that it can create perfect curls and waves on dry or wet hair. As it is heatless, you don't need to worry about any heat damage, frizz or hair breakage - which is good for those, like me again, choose to bleach their hair quite a few times.
To create those fuss-free curls, all you need to do is to secure the satin wand in place like a headband with the clawclip, before wrapping sections of your hair on each side around it. You can then secure your curls with the satin scrunchies provided and sleep overnight with them.
How Aldi's Heatless Curler worked in my hair
So, first things first, I don't just have thin, fine and bleached hair. I also have fairly short, shoulder-length hair that has an awful lot of layers, which doesn't make styling it all that easy.
Nevertheless, I am nothing if not persistant, especially since I have tried every tool on the market. From curling tongs, hair straighteners and rollers, you name it, I have tried it and my curls usually fall straight out after a few hours.
Using Aldi's Satin Curling Wand did take a few trial and errors, and I watched numerous TikTok tutorials before I managed to properly wind my hair round without it falling out every two seconds.
One piece of advice I have, is that it works better and is more manageable on slightly damp, clean hair. So, either use it once you have showered, or just wet your hair with a spritz bottle first.
Once I had all the curls in place and secured with the satin scrunchies, I had to decide how I was going to sleep in them. I did try and fold them out of the way, but that was insanely uncomfortable, which led me down another TikTok rabbit hole before discovering that securing them round the back like a halo was a much better option.
Curls in place and heatless curler secured at the back, I decided to hit snooze for the day and was excited to see what my hair would look like in the morning.
After eight hours of decent sleep in the satin hair band, the first thing I did was gently remove it from my hair, and let me tell you, I was fairly surprised to see my pin-straight hair fall into a soft, easy curl. It didn't mimic the tight curl you get from a heated curling wand, but it certainly gave that bouncy, easy-going style that is perfect for for a casual daytime look.
They also surprisingly lasted quite a few hours, and just needed a little bit off a fluffing back up with my hands. They were also quite silky and didn't look like I had completely damaged them and caused a lot off frizz with added heat, so that was another result.
Overall thoughts
Overall, Aldi's Lacura Satin Heatless Curling Set more than lived up to the hype, especially considering I am usually a pessimist when it comes to haircare as mines is so fussy.
Once you get the hang of it, its fairly easy to use and can actually be a lot more comfortable than those tight rollers we all used to torture ourselves with.
While my curls might not have been those chunky spirals that many influencers show off after using them, I was pleasantly surprised at the fuss-free waves that stayed in my hair for the vast majority of the day. And, if I can continue getting that easy-going curled look without heat damage, I'll happily continue using this satin curling set.
