Since seeing this image of Jessica Alba's chic and inviting living room, I can safely say I'm still hooked on bouclé. I've asked the experts to share their thoughts on this textile hero. North Carolina-based interior designer, Windsor Dalton, explains the long-standing appeal of this statement piece of furniture. 'Boucle chairs have stayed popular because the rich texture adds softness, warmth, and visual depth to a room.' He notes the fabric's practicality, too. 'Boucle also wears very well, so the fuzzy texture suits high-traffic areas.'
In Jessica Alba's living room, the key to its success is the interplay between the soft boucle texture and the more rustic finishes of the rest of her furniture, such as the black cabinet, unfinished wood table, and oversized basket planter (IKEA has similar) 'I especially love using boucle chairs to soften rustic interiors with natural wood and vintage pieces, and I often pair them with contrasting materials like leather or linen rather than matching the sofa exactly,' adds Windsor.
Marissa Burrett, Lead Designer at DreamSofa agrees: 'I recently worked on a project in Beverly Hills where the client had a rustic mix of vintage wood cabinets, indoor olive trees, and a linen sectional. Adding two ivory boucle swivel chairs immediately softened the space and made the room feel layered rather than heavy.'
Interestingly, just like in Jessica Alba's home, you'll usually find boucle chairs in neutral ivory or beige tones, as opposed to bright hues, but rather than being a sign that we should be decorating with cream, it's a very intentional move by designers. Bruce Tucker, Co-Founder, Octane Seating elaborates: 'A bouclé chair creates impact through surface and form rather than relying on bold color, and the looped, nubby yarn gives a lively play of light and shadow, so even soft tones look rich and considered at different times of day. That makes it feel like a focal point without visually shouting, which suits the current preference for calm interiors where comfort still looks intentional.'
Boucle also offers a wonderfully relaxed alternative to luxe materials, whilst still feeling chic. James Fung, principal of NB Design Group in Seattle says: 'We like to use boucle chairs in our projects when we are looking to add subtle contrast and texture whilst still feeling casual, unlike mohair or velvet that can at times feel very formal.'
As for the shape, Jessica Alba's statement boucle chairs feature an organic and enveloping profile that signifies comfort. Bruce explains why using curves in interior design like this works so well. 'Curved silhouettes and bouclé work together because they communicate the same message of softness and ease. A rounded back and arms create a cocooning feel that invites you to sit, and the absence of sharp edges makes a room feel less rigid. From a layout point of view, organic forms help circulation because they soften the sightlines that come from the rectangles that most rooms already contain, such as rugs, sofas, tables, and cabinetry.'
But can you make this look work in both modern and traditional homes? Absolutely, says Bruce, and he credits the timelessness of boucle chairs to that very reason. 'The trend is sticking around because it's so adaptable. Bouclé can lean contemporary in a pared-back space, yet it also sits comfortably alongside more traditional architecture and mixed periods.'
