Over the weekend, two of my closest friends tied the knot in a beautiful village ceremony and I couldn’t have been more honoured to spend their big day with them. This was my first ‘proper’ time attending a wedding as an adult guest, and so, I was very excited to find the perfect outfit.
The rain held off for their October wedding, which was super seasonal, with pumpkin centrepieces, dried blooms and pine cones. I knew wearing a summery floral number was going to look out of place, and with the weather being cooler, I knew I also wanted a longer dress to shelter my legs from the dipping temperatures.
Little Mistress has long been my go-to for occasionwear, ever since I bought my high school prom dress from there back in 2015. And the moment I laid eyes on this gold velvet dress , I knew she was the one. Love at first sight. Head over heels.
Wow is the only word to describe this dress. Described as gold, I felt it to be more of a burnt orange, but it definitely has a shimmer to it that makes it glisten at golden hour.
Crafted from a heavy, velvet fabric, it felt luxurious and high quality, making it well worth the £98 price tag . As soon as I put it on, I fell in love - is it possible to marry a dress? I needed it to have and to hold from this day forward.
The Little Mistress number has a v-neckline that isn’t too plunging, with seal detail that creates a sculpting bodice that brings a modern vintage feel to the dress. I’m aware that’s a complete oxymoron - but think Bridgerton bringing back romantic shapes and corset styles.
Angel sleeves make this dress extra dreamy, as it’s one of my favourite cuts. It disguises my shoulders and upper arm where I have insecurities, and creates volume similar to a puff-sleeve, but in a much more timeless way.
The skirt of the dress is described as having a ‘swishy floor sweeping hem’. My 5’5” frame was perhaps a little short, so I required some big heels to ensure I wouldn’t be tripping up over it or standing on it all day. I’ll likely hem it to be an inch or so shorter in the future, but I did love that it skimmed the floor for a ‘walking on air’ appearance.
The dress comes in sizes 8 to 18 - I went for a 10 but could possibly have sized it down as the material does have a bit of stretch to it. I was happy with the fit, though, and it didn’t look or feel too big.
I paired the dress with some black heels I already had in my wardrobe, some gold jewellery and a similarly coloured headband I’d picked up from Matalan the night before the wedding whilst panic-buying a suit for my partner. The bag was actually my prom bag which I'd worn with a Little Mistress dress seven years earlier. I'm a bit of a hoarder for accessories.
I received so many compliments on the day and it was surprisingly easy to dance in despite the weight and length of the skirt. I honestly don’t think I’ll ever need to buy another wedding guest dress in all my life. I’ve found the one. Til death do us part. You can shop the Little Mistress gold velvet seam detail dress here.
