'I flew on the shortest flight in Ireland - and it only takes six minutes'

An Irish blogger has revealed what it’s like to be a passenger on the shortest flight in Ireland.

The plane journey from Connemara to Inis Meáin in the Aran Islands takes just 6 minutes, covering a distance of around 18km.

Aer Arann charter the eight-seater plane to the Islands, which is so small the passengers have to be weighed before they get on board in order to equally distribute the weight.

Sarah Hanrahan shared a video of her travelling journey on her TikTok page, @icomeundone, that has since racked up more than 1.2 million views.

She said: “My parents live in Inis Meáin - which is the middle island of the Aran Islands off the coast of Galway.

“I fly over when I go to visit them. When I share it on my Instagram, I get lots of questions. So, I thought I'd elaborate here.”

She filmed the tiny Connemara Airport, which is located 30km away from Galway city, saying “This is the airport. No one ever believes this part. This is me getting weighed with my dog.

“My dog comes with me. He sits on my lap and they need to even out the weight on the flight so it doesn’t… I don’t know, fall out of the sky…

“It’s an eight-seater plane and the flight takes six minutes. Someone has to sit beside the pilot to even out the weight.”

With just eight passengers on board, the plane can wait for passengers who are running late to catch the flight.

This happened as Sarah was filming her blog as she shows the plane drive back down the runway to pick up a woman.

She said: “Here we are about to take off but then someone comes late to the airport wants to grab the flight so we tailback.

“We're already on the runway, we drive back to collect her.”

She continued: “And we are off. I'm in the back row which means I'm right in front of the luggage.

“Your luggage doesn't specifically get weighed. You don't need a passport.”

People couldn’t believe the unique journey with many saying something like this could only in Ireland.

One person wrote: “Stopping to go back & collect the late passenger is absolutely hilarious! This would genuinely only happen in Ireland.”

Another said: “Only thing that worries me is being weighed publicly.”

But Sarah reassured them, saying: “My dad tells me they used to shout your weight out loud but thankfully now they’re a bit more discreet.”

Aer Arann have served all three Aran Islands - Inis Mór, Inis Meáin and Inis Óirr - for over 30 years.

Flights cost roughly €35 for tourists for an adult single ticket and €20 for those who live on the island.
