Before I start this review, I've got to be honest, I'm a Clover girl through and through.
However, whilst living with my parents (who are self-confessed Lurpak lovers) I was eating Lurpak on a daily basis, but there was one thing that put me off once I'd moved away from home. The price of the stuff.
I'm sure you've all seen that photograph of the £9 Lurpak circulating on social media, and although mildly entertaining at the time, it gave us a pretty bleak glimpse into the effects of the cost of living crisis. Lurpak, a staple item in many households, has been being sold for almost a tenner.

Recently, Iceland shoppers have been rushing to stores to snap up the Lurpak 500g tubs reduced to £3 like it's gold dust, which is pretty scary to say the least. Whilst many supermarkets offer their own alternatives to Lurpak - such as Aldi with Nordpak, Lidl with Danpak and Morrisons own brand 'Spreadable'...does it taste just as good?
In order to do this review, I actually struggled to find a 500g tub of Lurpak myself, so had to settle with the smaller version. Aldi's 'Nordpak' was also pretty hard to come by, and I had to visit two different stores to get my hands on it.
Currently, a 500g tub of Lurpak from Tesco is £5, which is quite pricey for butter. Aldi's Nordpak cost me £2.15, which is over half price. I'm a big fan of Aldi dupe products, so was intrigued to see how it tasted in comparison.
The look
In true Aldi fashion, the 'Nordpak' looks pretty much identical to the original Lurpak in terms of colours and branding. The tub looked way more expensive than it actually was, and you got absolutely loads in it.
The butter itself looked a lot more yellow in colour compared to the Lurpak, which had a creamier, white aesthetic. But as far as butter goes, they both looked scrumptious and ready for me to spread on some nice warm toast.
The taste
Once my toast was ready I spread both butters on two different sides and cut them in half to separate the two. After taking a bite into the Lurpak side, my first thoughts were: "This isn't as nice as Clover" - but tossing my opinion aside, the Lurpak was generally tasty.
It was just as creamy as I remember and tasted quite salty considering it was described as 'slightly salted'. One thing I do love about Lurpak is the fact it sticks to it's 'spreadable' promise, it spread onto my toast perfectly with no rips and tears.
My overall thoughts on the Lurpak original? It was just as nice as I remembered and had a lovely creamy taste. But now, it was time to try the more affordable Aldi's Nordpak.
First impressions? I preferred it. I can't exactly pinpoint why, but I think it had something to do with the general creaminess of the butter. The Nordpak was thick and had a bit more of a noticeable flavour, the Lurpak classic was kind of just average.
I was actually pleasantly surprised at how good Nordpak was, although it's also described as 'slightly salted' it wasn't as salty as the original Lurpak and it was generally really light. A lot of butters, particularly salted, can be so heavy and overpowering, but the Nordpak was just right.
The verdict
Well done Aldi, you've exceeded by expectations once again! If you're a Lurpak lover but don't want to splash the cash on a tub, Nordpak is a perfect alternative. Both butters are extremely similar in taste, and it's only because I was being extra picky that I could notice the difference between the two.
In a nutshell, the Nordpak is thicker, creamier and less salty, but the Lurpak is slightly easier to spread and more salty. So, it is really down to personal preference, but I think the Nordpak is definitely worth the purchase.
