'I burst out laughing at my brother's tattoo - he's fuming but it's ridiculous'

When you get a tattoo, it's common for the design you get to hold special meaning to you and be something that you want to have inked on your skin for the rest of your life. However, it's also just as common to get a tattoo of something that you simply like the look of, even if it holds no significance to you personally.

But one man, 32, has seemingly angered his 25-year-old brother after he burst out laughing when he saw his sibling's new ink, as he believed the meaning of the tattoo was "really ironic" given his brother's history.

The man explained his brother, Danny, is a serial cheater in his relationships, but recently decided to show off his brand new tattoo across his arm, which read "Loyalty" in big letters. And when the man saw it, he couldn't help but laugh - causing his younger sibling to storm off to his bedroom.

In a post on Reddit, the man said: "My little brother has been in a string of relationships since he was young enough to know what dating was. On several occasions, the relationships ended because he was caught cheating with another girl. In fact, his current girlfriend was the 'other woman' from his previous relationship.

"He (I'll call him Danny) still lives with my parents and I headed over on the 4th [of July] for a barbecue. When he reached out for a hug I noticed his arm was super red and he showed me his brand-new tattoo that he had literally just gotten. In huge letters, it said 'LOYALTY' in cursive.

"Where I might be the a**hole is that I kinda laughed as soon as I saw it and didn't try to hide it at all. He said 'what's so funny' and I just said his tattoo was really ironic. He got p***ed and stormed off to his room and didn't join my parents and I for dinner.

"I told them what happened and they said I was being an a**hole, and my sister said people are allowed to change. I personally think he's acting like a child by locking himself in his room and that I shouldn't be blamed for a 25 year old storming off."

Commenters on the post were firmly on the man's side, with many of them agreeing that his brother's tattoo was, in fact, ironic.

One person said: "I was all ready to chide you for belittling already-done, artistic choices by other people, but … nope. That's a ridiculously oblivious tattoo choice for a serial cheater."

While another added: "My oldest brother is a chronic cheater too, and if he got that tattoo I'd laugh until I cried. And then tell him it's good he has the reminder because he needs it."

But a third could see both sides, as they said: "His tattoo is definitely ironic. Hiding out in his bedroom is very immature. However, you aren't entirely off the hook. It was rude of you to laugh. Maybe he got it to inspire himself to be better. Laughing embarrassed him. You really need to apologise."
