Amazon has some great — and some not-so-great — items in its catalog. If you’re in the mood to do some shopping, figuring out exactly what to get can be tricky. Not only do you have to narrow down the category, but you then have to sift through a seemingly endless list of sellers.

To make the search easier, GOBankingRates asked ChatGPT for a list of the best and worst kinds of items to buy online from Amazon. These are the categories it came up with, and options from each.

ChatGPT: Best Kinds of Items to Buy From Amazon

According to the AI tool, there are main types of items you might want to consider getting from Amazon. Diving in further, GOBankingRates picked out a few goodies from each category to check out.

Basic or Reusable Household Items

Small Appliances or Household Gadgets

Electronics From Reputable Brands (Look for discounts.)

ChatGPT: Avoid These Amazon Items — Or Use Caution

According to ChatGPT, there’s no singular “worst” type of item to buy on the eCommerce platform. But there are some things you’ll want to generally avoid or be cautious about purchasing. These are the big ones, and examples of each.

Big or Bulky Furniture (Returns can be a hassle; size and fit might not be right.)

Large Household Appliances (May require professional installation.)

Cheap or No-Brand Electronics (Risk of low quality or incompatibility.)

Power Tools or Specialized Hardware (Stick to specialty retailers if you’re unsure.)

Things To Know Before You Buy

Remember, just because something falls under the “avoid” category doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy them at all. There are definite gems even there, just as there are duds in the “best” categories.

If you are shopping online, here are some tips:

  • “Check brands and verify their authenticity (especially for pricier items).”
  • “Verify the brand’s return policy.”
  • “Check out customer reviews.”
  • “Buy goods from sellers you trust (and avoid third-party or lesser-known sellers).”
  • “Compare prices (if something is too high or “too good to be true,” look elsewhere).”
  • “Filter your search results by ‘Sold by Amazon’ or ‘Ships from and sold by Amazon.'”
