Broadway legend Patti LuPone was notably absent from the 2025 Tony Awards ceremony following a controversy sparked by her disparaging comments about fellow theater stars Audra McDonald and Kecia Lewis. The incident has caused significant upheaval in the Broadway community, leading to a collective response from industry professionals. This backlash isn’t the first time LuPone’s conduct has drawn scrutiny. 

According to People, the controversy began when LuPone made demeaning remarks about McDonald and Lewis in a recent interview with The New Yorker. The comments prompted more than 500 members of the Broadway community to sign an open letter condemning LuPone’s behavior.
