Water management digital solution platform Hydrogence, powered by the Hydro-Informatics Institute (HII) and the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (Depa), has won a hackathon competition at the World Expo 2020 in Dubai.
The platform connects and crowdsources data from sensors and user-generated reports to evaluate it in real time to automate infrastructure.
To avoid flooding, Hydrogence optimises the controls of water gates and pumps.
Hydrogence won the "Future Water Hack" competition in a hackathon programme called MindSphere Future World Series, and received the Community Choice Award with most public votes.
The event was held from March 6-10 with the participation of more than 90 teams from around the world.
"Many cities in Southeast Asia have similar geography that makes them prone to floods, therefore this approach will benefit more than just Thailand's capital," said Depa president and chief executive Nuttapon Nimmanphatcharin.
The award, he said, highlights strong collaboration between the two state organisations to capitalise on advanced technology to improve people's livelihoods, he said.
Passakon Prathombutr, senior executive vice-president of Depa, said Hydrogence not only makes full use of the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing and advanced machine learning technology, but also uses low-code to prototype the Hydrogence design.
Hydrogence connects real-time data from Bangkok's 242 water gates, 191 water pumps, and 573 water current sensors in 1,984 waterways totalling 2,760 kilometres in length for the prototype, he said.
Hydrogence, which is revolutionising the administration of water supply in the city, automatically analyses enormous amounts of data and sends signals to govern the operation of the city's water infrastructure.
The platform's development team was led by Mr Passakon and Surajate Boonya-aroonnet, HII's director of the hydroinformatics innovation division.
The team's members comprise experts in hydroinformatics, data analytics, advanced computer modelling, software development and urban planning.
