Huyton bingo caller to travel UK using just public transport

A bingo caller from Huyton is set to travel around the UK in 15 days.

Using as many forms of transport as possible, Mattie Parkinson will be setting off from his home in Huyton and travelling across Britain over the course of 15 days. The 30-year-old said the inspiration for the trip came back in 2020 when his dad bought him Jules Verne’s novel Around the World in Eighty Days.

Mattie's route will see him go from Liverpool to Carlisle, Oban, Thurso, Edinburgh, Grimsby, Kings Lynn, Great Yarmouth, Clacton, Margate, Exmouth, Hayle, Barnstaple, Swansea, Bangor and back home within 15 days as he raises money for Macmillan. He told the ECHO: "On Tuesday I'll be starting from Liverpool and travelling around Britain.

"I'm going to be travelling by all forms of transport. The aim is to be back in Liverpool within 15 days. I've wanted to do this for quite some time and it all started in 2020. I'm doing this in memory of my nan and grandad.

"My nan died back in 2007 of cancer and three years ago my grandad had a fall at home. He was by himself and he cut his arm, because he was on blood thinners he bled out.

"I remember when my nan died, I was only in high school. I was devastated. They were amazing people. They always took me and my sisters out. We would visit Southport and go round to their house every week."

Having always wanted to travel, Mattie said he has been supported by his colleagues at Mecca Bingo in Knotty Ash where he has worked for almost two years. He said: "Their support has been amazing. It's been great.

"I've had so much support from my managers and colleagues. You have a laugh working there. We're like a big happy family."
