Hunt launched for car that fled scene after colliding with police officer

POLICE are searching for a vehicle that fled the scene of a collision which left a police officer “seriously” injured in hospital.

The incident took place at around 1pm on Friday, August 30 on Low Waters Road in Hamilton.

Officers on patrol had approached an Audi S3 car and attempted to engage with the driver.

However, when approached the car took off and collided with the male police officer in the process.

The 33-year-old officer has been taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment for “serious injuries”.

It is understood that the officer's injuries are not described as life-threatening and that the force is offering support to both him and his family.

The other police officer at the scene was not injured.

Police have now launched a search for the vehicle and its occupants after it left the scene.

An investigation is being carried out by officers from Police Scotland's Lanarkshire Division who are working alongside specialist Road Policing cops.

The force said extensive inquiries are ongoing.

DI Scott Robertson said: “Our thoughts are very much with our colleague who has suffered serious injuries in this incident.

“His family are aware and we are providing them with support, as well as the other officers who have attended the scene.

“We believe this was an isolated incident and there is no wider risk to the public. I would urge anyone who has not already spoken to police to come forward with any information that may assist us.

“I would ask any drivers with dash-cam to please check their footage and contact us if it holds information relevant to this collision.

“Anyone who can help is asked to call 101, quoting reference 1673 of August 30.”
