Huge new Lidl opening in Southport bringing in new jobs

A new supermarket will be coming to one area of Merseyside.

Plans have been approved by Sefton Council for a new Lidl on the Land West Of Marine Drive in Crossens. The development will include a retail store, car parking, and servicing areas.

The 1.2-hectare site designated as an employment area has been allocated for industrial and employment use since 2017. The plans which were submitted in 2021 have gone through several amendments before finally being approved on 5 August this year.

The 1,900 sqm site has been approved subject to conditions which include, the store only being allowed open for business between the hours of 7am and 10pm and the retail and display area of goods not allowed to exceed 1,005 sqm

The developers will also make improvements to the area around the site and the footpath on Ferryside Lane will be resurfaced to the junction on Crossens Way, with new street lighting also being implemented.

The area of land is currently an empty, overgrown field and was previously used as an agricultural site. Dedicated pedestrian access will be provided directly from the footway on Marine Drive.

Architects working on the design of the site, One Design Ltd, said: "Lidl regards the application site as ideally suited to meet its requirement for a new discount store to better serve the local community. Given Lidl’s commitment to investing in Southport, the development will increase the local communities' retail offering."
