Huge fire breaks out in Glasgow's east end as public told to 'avoid area'

Firefighters are still tackling a huge blaze in the east end of Glasgow more than 15 hours after it began with the public being told to "avoid the area".

Emergency services were called to a recycling centre on London Road shortly after 5pm following reports of a blaze close to the Emirates Arena. Images show huge plumes of smoke billowing out in the east end of the city.

Police have said that road closures are in place and have told residents to shut their doors and windows. Four fire engines remain on the scene as of Wednesday morning.

Police Scotland Greater Glasgow tweeted: "Officers are in attendance to assist with traffic management following a fire on London Road, Glasgow.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the area as road closures are in place. Local residents should keep windows and doors closed due to smoke."

Glasgow City Council added in a further tweet: "Due to a fire in Nuneaton Street, the A728 Clyde Gateway is closed to all traffic from Dalmarnock Road to London Road. Road users are advised to avoid this area and seek an alternate route."

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were alerted at 5.08pm on Tuesday, June 6, to a fire within the grounds of a recycling centre in Nuneaton Street, Glasgow.

"Operations control mobilised seven appliances and a specialist resource unit to the scene.

"Crews remain in attendance and there are no reported casualties."

On Wednesday, the fire service added: "We are still in attendance with four appliances."
