HSBC customers struggled to pay with their debit cards or withdraw cash from ATM machines this afternoon.
The major UK bank said in a tweet at around 2pm that "some customers" were experiencing issues although it is unclear exactly how many people are being affected.
HSBC told its followers it was "investigating" the issue and at just before 6pm this evening, the bank confirmed that the issue had been resolved.
In its first tweet addressing the issue, HSBC said: "Service update: We understand some customers are experiencing issues when paying for goods, services or withdrawing cash.
"We apologise and are investigating as a matter of urgency. We will share an update as soon as possible."
HSBC customers took to Twitter this afternoon to share the issues they were facing.
Some customers reported that cash was showing as being taken from their account even though their transaction was declined.
On Twitter user said: "I was able to draw out cash...I went into a shop and then my card was declined!!
"Says £70 has gone out of my account."
Another added: "Yeah.. it happened to me.. got declined at the till in Co op and tried twice, the money was still taken."
A third person shared: "Tried to pay for my poll tax in the post office 3 times and got declined all three times but yet 3 payments have been taken out of my account .

HSBC told customers that money shown to be withdrawn from their account will be a "pending transaction" and should automatically be refunded back.
The bank said: "While it's pending, you won't accrue any overdraft charges or anything on that amount."
Customers started to report there were issues with payments after 1pm today. Some people also said they were facing issues with their HSBC banking app too.
It was unclear what exactly is causing the problems.
In its tweet confirming the issue had been fixed HSBC said: "Service update: Issues impacting customers paying for goods, services or withdrawing cash have now been resolved.
"To those impacted, we’re sorry for the inconvenience and we thank you for your patience."
