How to stop kidney disease from getting worse?

Kidney diseases pose a significant threat to global health, but with preventive measures, risks can be mitigated to improve our kidney health. Adopting a healthy lifestyle is paramount, which includes maintaining a balanced diet low in sodium and sugar, staying hydrated, and engaging in regular physical activity to fortify kidney function. Equally crucial is managing conditions like diabetes and hypertension, major contributors to kidney ailments

According to Dr. A.V.S.S.N. Sridhar, Consultant – Nephrology and Renal Transplant Physician at Manipal Hospital Vijayawada, routine check-ups are essential for early detection and intervention, averting potential complications. By taking proactive steps to raise awareness and empower individuals, we can foster a world where kidney health thrives.

Prioritize kidney health through lifestyle choices and regular monitoring

The best way to maintain kidney health is to look after your general health and drink plenty of water every day. Optimal control of diabetes and blood pressure is the most important medical intervention if you are diabetic or hypertensive.

Dr. Partha Pradeep Shetty, consultant-nephrologist and Transplant Physician at Manipal Hospital Miller’s Road, suggests avoiding the consumption of unnecessary medications, painkillers, and supplements without consulting your physician.

• If you have never checked your kidney function and you are an adult, please meet with your physician and undergo basic blood and urine tests.

• If you have a strong family history of kidney stones, please get checked immediately.

• If you are diabetic or hypertensive and already have a kidney issue, you will need regular long-term follow-up, as these conditions could predispose you to kidney issues in the future.

5 key strategies for optimal kidney health

Dr. Ravishankar B, Consultant - Nephrology and Transplant Physician at Manipal Hospital Whitefield, lists five important ways to help delay the progression of kidney diseases.

1. Good control of blood sugars in diabetic individuals, achieving a target HbA1C of 6.5 to 7.0% through medical treatment and dietary interventions.

2. Good blood pressure control, achieving a target BP of less than 125/75 through medications and a low-sodium diet of less than 3 grams per day.

3. Regular exercise to achieve an ideal body weight for height through a low-calorie, low-carbohydrate diet. Regular brisk walking for 45 minutes, 5 days a week, is recommended.

4. Quit smoking to decrease exposure to nicotine, which has adverse effects on blood vessels, helping to prevent kidney disease and heart diseases.

5. Maintain a healthy diet low in carbohydrates and rich in fiber, including salads, fruits, green leafy vegetables, and lean proteins such as fish rather than meat.

A combination of these measures, along with controlling high cholesterol and high uric acid through drug therapy and dietary interventions, would be adjunctive in delaying the progression of kidney disease.
