How to spend 48 hours in Andermatt: a traditional Swiss resort with a most modern edge

Andermatt is an Alpine mountain resort on a high valley plain that seamlessly combines the flower-filled beauty of an historic Swiss village with the convenience of a thoroughly modern purpose-built ski infrastructure. The resort’s new area, Andermatt Reuss, has welcomed five-star hotels, Michelin-starred dining and sleek contemporary apartments.

Andermatt sits in the Ursern Valley in central Switzerland and has a long tradition of welcoming travellers. The Gotthard Pass, the key connection between northern and southern Europe since the 12th Century, is the most famous of eight local mountain passes, and made Andermatt an important staging post over the years. Visitors as disparate as German poet Goethe and Queen Victoria came over time to take in the Alpine air.
