How to pay respects to Alex Salmond as Yes Bikers to lead tributes

ALEX Salmond's body will return to the north east of Scotland, close to his home in Strichen,  this afternoon, with people invited to pay tribute.

The former first minister is set to arrive on Friday afternoon close to the seats he represented at both Westminster and Holyrood in Aberdeenshire.

The flight, which was chartered by Sir Tom Hunter, took off from Ohrid St Paul the Apostle Airport just after 10.20am UK time.

Plans are being put in place for a private family funeral along with a more public memorial service, however Salmond's wife Moira has invited anyone wishing to welcome her late husband home to “join him on one last journey”.

What time does Alex Salmond's plane arrive?

It is understood that the plane from North Macedonia will arrive at Aberdeen Airport at 1:45pm and shortly after, the cortege will be led by member of the group Yes Bikers.

However, FlightRadar24 shows the plane is running slightly behind schedule, so things are likely to begin slightly later.

How do I join the convoy?

People have been invited to join the convoy to pay their respects.

The procession is to end at Fraserburgh and people who do not have a car are urged to stand along the route and wave a flag.

The cortege will be led off by the bikers and should you wish to join the convoy behind the three cars, the public have been reminded to follow the car carrying Alex Salmond to Fraserburgh.

The family will turn off to go to their home in Strichen.

What if I don't have a car or make it to the convoy?

Independence group All Under One Banner have said: “If you're not in a car and you live along the route, get your flags out. Give him a wave.”

Alternatively, if you cannot make it to the convoy or the route, there are two online books of condolence that have been opened.

The Alba party book can be found here.

The Scottish Parliament book can be found here.

It is also understood STV will provide broadcast footage of the plane's arrival and of the coffin as it comes off the plane.
