How to learn the Avada Kedavra curse in Hogwarts Legacy

Hogwarts Legacy has plenty of spells for a young witch or wizard to learn as they journey through the Wizarding World. Spells acquired throughout the game range from the harmless to the downright deadly.

As Harry Potter fans know, there is no spell more deadly than Avada Kedavra. One of the three Unforgivable Curses, it has been used throughout the Potter franchise to kill several main characters, including Cedric Diggory, Professor Dumbeldore, and even Harry himself.

The spell can kill enemies in a single use, hence why it is known as the killing curse. In Hogwarts Legacy, it is the most powerful spell in the game, and as such, it can only be acquired fairly late on.

How to learn Avada Kedavra in Hogwarts Legacy

Avada Kedavra is the third and final Unforgivable Curse players can learn in Hogwarts Legacy. It can only be acquired by progressing through the game’s main story.

It is unlocked towards the end of Sebastian Sallow’s side-quest line. Players are offered the option to learn the spell during the In the Shadow of the Relic quest – the seventh quest of the Sebastian sub-plot.

During the quest, players will speak to Sebastian and be prompted to choose from two dialogue options, ‘No one should know that curse’ or ‘Everyone should know that curse’. After choosing ‘Everyone should know that curse’, Sebastian will offer to teach the player Avada Kedavra.

He will then present two further dialogue options, ‘Now is not the time’ or ‘Yes please’. Choose ‘Yes please’ and Sebastian will teach the player how to cast the killing curse.

If the player chooses ‘Now is not the time’, they can return to Sebastian later on to learn the spell, depending on certain story choices. During Sebastian’s next quest, In the Shadow of Fate, players will be given another dialogue choice when talking to Slytherin student Ominis Gaunt.

Players are presented with ‘We should turn Sebastian in’ and ‘We must not turn Sebastian in’. Choosing the second option will allow the player to meet Sebastian in the Undercroft where he will offer to teach any of the three unforgivable curses the player didn’t learn during the game.

Luckily, there are no downsides to using the curse in terms of the story and its outcome. It does not affect any plot-lines and the player is not punished for using it, though the player’s companions may make a comment if they see the curse being used.

Players should note that Avada Kedavra has a very long cooldown before it can be used again, but due it its power, it can be essential to getting out of some sticky situations.
