Unlike many games, killing enemies and crafting items in Windrose doesn’t award XP. Instead, you must focus on completing quests and looting points of interest to level up. This allows you to gain more stat points and unlock more Talents, strengthening your build.
Here’s every way to earn XP in Windrose and level up.

How to level up fast in Windrose
Complete quests

Completing main and side quests is the first way of earning XP in Windrose. The main quest steps, such as beating Captain Thomas Richards, are essential to progress and unlock new gear. You can also come across side quests as you explore different points of interest.
Keep in mind that side activities, like Blackbeard Crew Maps, don’t grant XP. Only quests in your Journal. They’re still worth doing to get loot, but don’t expect to level up.
Loot points of interest

Another way to earn XP is to loot points of interest. Every island has a couple of question marks that could be pirate camps, ruins, outposts, or anything else. As mentioned before, you can come across side quests in these locations, making them worth your time even more.
Once you discover the POI, the map shows how many chests it has and the XP rewards. The more chests the location has, the more XP you get. However, you only get XP for looting all the chests in a POI.
When it comes to XP rewards, here’s what you can expect:
- POI with one chest: 25 XP
- POI with two chests: 50 XP
- POI with three chests: 50 XP
- POI with four chests: 50 XP
- POI with six chests: 100 XP
In some locations, the chests are slightly hidden. For example, Ancient Ruins often have a cellar with one or two chests. Sometimes, the chest can be buried under debris. You can spot it thanks to shining particles and dig it up with a pickaxe.
Traveler’s Camps and Jungle Caves have hints in the notes, Shipwrecks may have one or two on deck, and all the pirate POIs often have chests scattered around multiple rooms and camps. The chests in the locations don’t respawn, but materials and supplies (like Healing Herbs for Healing Potions) do, so there’s a reason to return to some of them later.
When exploring, bring enough resources to build a Tent and a Fast Travel Point in case you run into trouble. This way, you can clear every island and get as much XP as possible without wasting much time on travel.
