How to cut onions the Michelin way as we've all been doing it 'wrong' for years

No matter how good you are in the kitchen, there are often some tasks that can be more difficult than others - such as chopping onions.

Red and stinging eyes aside, it can be tricky to get the perfect cut for the recipes that you need them for, and getting perfectly small pieces can be really time-consuming.

But one man on TikTok says we've all been doing it wrong and has demonstrated the 'Michelin' method that trained chefs apparently use, as it makes each dish taste much better.

The tip was shared on social media by Tommo Carroll, who is aiming to learn 100 'new skills' within a year and is documenting his progress on TikTok.

One of these skills appears to be cooking, and after coming across a video demonstrating the onion-cutting method that Michelin chefs use, he created his own clip to inform his followers.

He starts off the video by claiming that we are "cutting onions wrong" then proceeded to show exactly how the pros do it.

Taking a red onion, Tommo said: "First, you quarter it, then you split it into individual layers. Then remove the end, and smoosh the layers down flat."

Taking each individual piece of the onion's later, he then sliced it "super thin" lengthways then sideways, resulting in tiny cubes that are ready for cooking.

Tommo continued: "They're cut this way so they literally melt evenly into whatever you're cooking."

He admitted this process does tend to take longer than other methods, but by doing it, you can be "one step closer to becoming a chef."

In the comments, people were divided about using this method, with some saying that it simply wasn't worth the length of time it took.

One person said: "Too much work [I don't care] about it, they taste good big."

But another wrote: "So satisfying", while a third raved: "I love onions."
