How the relegation picture looks as Leeds United claim vital win and Everton lose again

Few envisaged Leeds United being embroiled in a battle for survival when the current Premier League campaign kicked off but the Whites are fighting for their top-flight status.

Nine matches remain for Jesse Marsch's men, who bounced back from a lacklustre display in the defeat to Aston Villa to clinch three points against fellow strugglers Norwich City.

The win was secured in dramatic fashion but was secured nonetheless courtesy of Joe Gelhardt's late winner.

The win created distance between the Whites and some of their rivals but whilst Burnley and Everton have games in hand on Leeds, the Elland Road faithful will not be able to breathe a sigh of relief.

LeedsLive have taken a look at how the relegation picture looks in the Premier League following the latest round of fixtures.

15th: Brentford

Played: 29 | Points: 30

Ivan Toney's brace in Brentford's 2-0 win over Burnley provided the Bees with some much-needed breathing space in the battle for survival.

The three points took their tally to 30 points, giving them a nine-point advantage over Sean Dyche's struggling Clarets and ensuring their eight-point advantage over Watford would remain intact regardless of how the Hornets fared against Southampton.

Thomas Frank's men are not quite out of the woods but they have given themselves a slight margin for error in the run-in.

16th: Leeds United

Played: 29 | Points: 26

Anything but a win over Norwich would have been a missed opportunity for Leeds, who needed to create distance between themselves and the sides below them.

Perhaps more importantly, they needed to end their miserable run of defeats and restore some confidence in a side that playing like it had very little.

The win over the Premier League's basement boys was welcomed but will need to be followed up on if Marsch's men are to retain their place in the top flight.

17th: Everton

Played: 26 | Points: 22

Although the games in hand are comforting, it is difficult to see where the wins are going to come from for Everton.

Frank Lampard has led the Toffees to just one Premier League victory since taking charge and their uninspiring form has put them in a precarious position.

The number of games played by Everton ensures their fate remains in their hands for now but their supporters could be forgiven for believing their club could fumble it.

18th: Watford

Played: 29 | Points: 22

Watford produced the perfect response to their humbling at the hands of Wolves with an impressive win away at Southampton, although it was not enough to lift them clear of the relegation zone.

Roy Hodgson's side are level with Everton on points but having played three more games, they have less control over their current situation.

19th: Burnley

Played: 27 | Points: 21

A win over Tottenham Hotspur and respectable point picked up on the road against Crystal Palace generated hope amongst sections of the Burnley fanbase that their club had a future in the Premier League.

However, a run of three consecutive defeats without scoring a single goal has plunged the Clarets into trouble.

They occupy 19th place and although they have played two less games than Leeds and Watford, form is not on their side and their next fixture pits them against the formidable force that is Manchester City.

20th: Norwich City

Played: 29 | Points: 17

Norwich have once again struggled to meet the demands of the Premier League and look destined to make an immediate return to the Championship.

Kenny McLean's equaliser against Leeds provided a flicker of hope but many dreams of a great escape will have been dashed when the Whites notched the winner just three minutes later.

Mathematically, they are not down but a miraculous rejuvenation would be required to keep the heads of the Canaries above water.
