How old is Gemma Owen? Love Island star's age leaves viewers gobsmacked as new series launches

Gemma Owen was already one of the most talked about contestants on Love Island before it had even started and now viewers have been left gobsmacked by her age.

When the Love Island 2022 contestants were revealed at the start of last week, Gemma's was the name that caused the biggest stir as the penny dropped for fans of the ITV2 show that she's the daughter of Michael Owen, the football icon famous for playing for the likes of Liverpool, Newcastle and of course England. Ahead of going into the new Love Island villa, Gemma, an international dressage rider, admitted she'd probably be competitive on the show as it "was in her blood," and she was at the centre of the action as Love Island kicked off on Monday night.

After the public decided who would be coupled up with who, rather than the Islanders themselves, Gemma found herself paired with Liam Llewellyn, but she didn't seem too keen. And then she 'snubbed' Liam in the first drinking game of the new series when she chose to kiss Love Island bombshell Davide rather than him.

That got viewers talking online, but not as much as Gemma's age.

How old is Gemma Owen?

Gemma was born in Chester on May 1, 2003 so she is only just 19-years-old.

And the fact that Gemma is still a teenager and was only 16 when the coronavirus pandemic started was something Love Island viewers couldn't quite get their heads round. One tweeted: "Me seeing Gemma Owen on tv and she’ 19. I feel like a geriatric!"

A second posted: "How is Gemma 19?! I’m 19 and look like a 10 year old," while others voiced concerns about her being so young, with another commenting: "Gemma Owen is 19!!! If they're putting effort into caring for the contestants' mental health, maybe up the age limit to 21 at the very least."
