King Charles III has succeeded Queen Elizabeth II to become the United Kingdom's head of state.
Buckingham Palace confirmed on Thursday (September 8) that Queen Elizabeth had died at the age of 96. A statement released yesterday read: " The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."
Having ascended to the throne in 1952 at the age of 25, the Queen was Britain’s head of state for 70 years. Her eldest son Charles has now become King at the age of 73. He has immediately assumed the throne, while his wife Camilla has become Queen consort.

Charles' ascension to the throne has meant that the line of succession has changed. His oldest son, Prince William has become first in line to the throne, while William's oldest son Prince George is second.
William is also expected to take his father's old title and become the Prince of Wales. This is not automatic and will have to be conferred by the King. If it does happen, Kate Middleton would become the Princess of Wales - a title previously held by Princess Diana.
