Whale sharks do not have teeth designed for tearing. Their mouths, which can stretch nearly 1.5 metres wide, filter thousands of litres of seawater every hour, catching nothing larger than a shrimp. Rhincodon typus, the largest fish on Earth, is, in the most literal sense, harmless to everything except plankton. That fact did not stop fishermen along the Saurashtra coast from hunting them for decades.
