Elections for Wales' 22 councils are taking place in May 5, with results to come the following day. More than 1,200 councillors are being elected to councils and there are also people being elected to community councils.
In Wales, those aged 16 and 17 are allowed to vote in council elections, as are foreign nationals but only if you are registered to vote. If you are not yet registered it is too late to do so for this election but you can get your name on the electoral list for future elections.
You can register to vote in Wales from the age of 14 and your name will be on the electoral register. Electoral registers are held by your local council.

How do I check I'm registered to vote?
If you want to check you're registered to vote, you need to contact the electoral services team at your local council. The Electoral Commission has a widget you can use to check the contact details for your local council on its website.
What do I need to do to register?
To register to vote online, you need just five minutes and your National Insurance number. If you can’t register online, you can download a paper form. You don’t need to register to vote before every election but if you move house you need to register to vote again. If you change your name you can either re-register or contact your local council to request a change of name form.
Who can register?
To register to vote, you must be:
- a UK or Irish citizen
- a qualifying Commonwealth citizen living in the UK
- an EU citizen living in the UK
- a qualifying foreign citizen
- aged 14 or over (but you can’t vote until you’re 16 or 18 depending on the election)
