An affluent Cheshire town plagued by boy racers and supercars is fighting back using a state-of-the-art noise-activated camera. And it caught 60 drivers over the decibel limit in the first few weeks of it being installed.
The acoustic camera has been put up on the A34 Pendleton Way following a series of incidents in Wilmslow and Alderley Edge involving revving engines and speeding cars in an area plagued by 'boy racers' in supercars, CheshireLive reports.
The camera records noise above an acceptable level and identifies vehicles causing the disturbance, giving the police and Cheshire East Council key information about the worst offenders and enabling enforcement action to be taken against them. Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner John Dwyer told a meeting of the police and crime panel on Thursday (December 22): "In those early days we were working closely with Cheshire East Council and we picked up something like 60 offenders who were breaking the decibel limits on that road.

"That particular stretch of road was being used by boy racers in the main, but we actually have been videoing the offenders and some of the video has shown some awful driving, including a motorcyclist not only breaking the acoustic levels but also doing a wheelie."
He said the camera was helping police crackdown on these offenders so officers could make the roads safer. Average speed cameras are also being installed at various locations throughout the county.
The commissioner told the panel: "We’ve developed a framework which we’re hoping the parish councils across the county, where it's appropriate, can tap into to appoint and install average speed cameras on the difficult roads in their areas. We've also installed an average speed camera programme in each of the four local authority areas."
He said these were in the process of being installed.
