The Den Belongs to Everyone
A wolf mother gives birth in a den she has prepared, but within days the entire pack knows those pups exist. Adult wolves that are not the breeding pair, called subordinates or helpers, begin spending time near the den entrance, lying in wait, alert to any sound that doesn't belong. This is not incidental. A 2013 study published in PLOS ONE, tracking multiple wolf packs in Yellowstone National Park, found that packs with more non-breeding helpers had significantly higher pup survival rates than smaller packs where the breeding pair bore most of the load. The den is a communal project from the start.
